About Roman

Roman Buchberger’s story is one of resilience, service, and dedication to others.

Raised in Schaumburg, Illinois, Roman grew up in a blue-collar family that faced significant health challenges. By sixth grade, his father, already recovering from open-heart surgery, was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and went on disability soon after. While in eighth grade, Roman’s mother was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and sadly passed away during the winter of his freshman year in high school. Roman immediately began working after school to help support his father and younger brother.

After graduating from Hoffman Estates High School, Roman joined the U.S. Army, serving on active duty from 1990 to 1991. Just before completing his first year, tragedy struck again. His father passed away from cardiac failure. At just 19 years old, Roman petitioned for, and was granted, full legal custody of his 14-year-old brother. At that time, he transitioned from active duty to active reserves, serving from 1991 until 1998, and again from 2004-2008.

Roman studied Sociology at the College of Lake County in 2008. 

He enjoys, and still plays, ice hockey regularly.
