
A Career of Service
Roman’s law enforcement journey began in 1991 as a Community Service Officer. He became a full-time Police Officer in 1997 and earned multiple certifications, including:
- Field Training Officer (FTO)
- Juvenile Officer (JO)
- Firearms Instructor
- Training Instructor
- McHenry County Honor Guard Member
He also served as an inspector with the North Central Narcotics Task Force (2000–2001) and was promoted to Patrol Supervisor in 2001, overseeing daily field operations and administrative duties.
In 2003, Roman joined the Lake County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy in the Highway Patrol Division. He reenlisted in the Army Reserves (2004–2008), and in 2005, he was one of only two Lake County Deputies selected to respond to Hurricane Katrina as part of the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System (ILEAS). While deployed in Louisiana, Roman was sworn in as a Special Agent with the Louisiana State Police, assisting in emergency response and rescue efforts.
Community Leadership & Recognition
Roman continued serving in multiple divisions, including Highway Patrol (2003-2007, 2009-2014, 2020-2022), Court Security (2007–2009) and later, Community Services (2014–2020). During this time, he earned certifications in:
- Senior Resource Officer
- Public Information Officer (PIO)
- Crisis Intervention Team (CIT)
- Procedural Justice Instructor
- Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)
- A.L.I.C.E. Active Shooter Instructor
He also played key roles in:
- Lake-McHenry Veterans & Family Services Unit
- DEA & Lake County Drug Disposal Program Coordinator
- Senior Advocates Group & Citizen Police Academy Leader
- Public/community Safety Coordinator
- Liaison to United Way and College of Lake County for career exploration
- Sheriff's Office representative for 7 countywide community coalitions
- Union Steward for Labor & Negotiations
Roman developed the Character Education/Choices Program (grades K–9) in collaboration with educators, a diversion program offered free to schools across Lake County. The program was recognized in 2017 by the Beach Park School District for its positive impact.
In 2018, Roman was named Volunteer of the Year by the Lake County Underage Drinking and Drug Prevention Task Force.
Why Roman is Running
After dedicating over 30 years to public service and retiring in 2022, Roman is ready to lead with integrity, vision, and a commitment to rebuilding trust between law enforcement and the community.
